This plant, a member of the citrus family, is an aromatic shrub or small tree with a broad, rounded canopy. It grows to 10-13 feet tall and has thorns or prickles on the young branches. It is native from Quebec to Nebraska and Virginia. The alternate leaves separate from one central area with 9-17 oval leaflets with toothed margins about 1-2 inches long. Flowering occurs during the winter months (December - February) in southern states and California. In the southeastern U.S., flowering occurs during March and during April - May in the northeastern and north central states. The flowers are primarily insect-pollinated with pollen rarely becoming airborne.
